Originally from suburban Philadelphia, Ms. Pape (née Smarr) studied voice, piano, bassoon and recorder during her youth. She graduated from the University of Michigan with high honors, having majored in voice performance and early music performance. Upon graduation, she became a member of The Broken Consort, an early music ensemble, and began her career as a cantorial soloist, concomitantly performing early Jewish music and contemporary music. She also appeared regularly in duo with a lutenist, performing the Renaissance repertoire. Ms. Pape was soprano soloist and conductor for six seasons of the Twice Festival of Contemporary Music, held in Michigan. She premiered works by John Cage, Robert Ashley and Gerard Pape.
After moving to Paris in 1991, Ms. Pape has been soloist in the Bach Magnificat and St. John’s Passion, Stabat Mater by Pergolesi and Schoenberg's Erwartung. She has concertized and recorded music by composers such as Iannis Xenakis (Radio France), Michael Pugliese (Radio France) Jean-Claude Risset (Bourges), Alain Bancquart, Paul Méfano (Versailles), Claude Elois, Christian Sebille, Luciano Berio, Luigi Nono, Arnold Schoenberg, Giocinto Scelsi, Ana Maria Avram, Sinan Bokesoy and Serge Belimov and she specilizes in microtonal singing.
Ms. Pape was invited to be soloist at the Bourges Festival in 1996. She has appeared numerous times at Radio France, most recently participating in the memorial concert for the late Iannis Xenakis. Ms. Pape has performed as soloist in Paris, Versailles, Salzburg, Tarbes, Athens, Darmstadt and Bucharest, Innsbruck and Edinburgh. In 2005 she premiered the role of Beatrice in the opera “The Cenci” by Gérard Pape. In 2009 she was guest soprano with Ensemble Duo Laude from Canada.
Janet Pape was soloist at the American Cathedral in Paris for 16 years and Eglise d'Auteuil for 10 years. She has served as cantorial soloist and choir director for the High Holy Days in Ann Arbor and Flint, Michigan, Orlando and Vero Beach, Florida, Denver and Morrison, Colorado, Hewlett, New York, Mobile, Alabama, Castro Valley, California and Paris, France. She also directed church choirs in Michigan for ten years.
Ms. Pape participated in the recording of several discs, notably, “Electro-acoustic Chamber Works by Gerard Pape” (Mode), “Robert Noehrens Premieres” (Delos), “Humana” (Columbia) and “George Cacciopo- Advance of the Fungi” (Mode).
Ms. Pape currently appears at the Theatre du Nord-Ouest, Paris playing recorders, percussion and singing incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, and as featured singer in Shakespeare Cabaret.

Née aux USA, Janet PAPE a suivi des études musicales à l’Université du Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dans les années 80, elle fut soprano soliste et chef d’orchestre lors des six éditions du festival de musique contemporaine du Michigan « Twice. ». Elle y a créé plusieurs œuvres (John Cage, Robert Ashley, Gérard Pape). Elle développe parallèlement un répertoire de musique ancienne, musique sacrée et musique folklorique sépharade et israélienne. Elle étude avec Elizabeth Humes, soprano du New York Pro Musica.
Dès son arrivée en France en 1991, elle chante de la musique contemporaine, créant Two Electro-Acoustic Songs de Gérard Pape en 1994 à Paris, puis au Blanc-Mesnil, à Athènes, Bourges, Darmstadt, Salzbourg, Tarbes et Innsbruck. En 2005, elle joue le rôle de Béatrice lors de la création de l’opéra Les Cenci de Pape. Elle a chanté en soliste lors des représentations du Magnificat et de la Passion de St. Jean de JS Bach, du Stabat Mater de Pergolèse et d’Erwartung de Schoenberg.
Elle chante la musique de compositeurs tels que Iannis Xenakis (Radio France), Michael Publiese (Radio France) Jean-Claude Risset (Bourges), Alain Bancquart, Paul Méfano (Versailles), Claude Elois, Christian Sebille, Sinan Bokesoy, Luciano Berio, Luigi Nono, Arnold Schoenberg, Giacinto Scelsi et Serge Belimov et se spécialise dans la musique micro tonale.
Janet Pape a été soliste pendant seize ans à la Cathédrale Américaine et à l'Eglise d'Auteuil de Paris et a aussi dirigé des chorales de musiques sacrées chrétienne et juives pendant dix ans aux Etats Uni dans le Michigan. Elle se produit chaque année aux USA en soliste lors des grandes fêtes juives à Ann Arbor et Flint dans le Michigan, Orlando et Véro Beach au Floride, Denver et Morrison dans le Colorado, Hewlett au New York, Mobile dans l'Alabama et Castro Valley dans la Californie.
Elle a participé à l’enregistrement de plusieurs disques : « Electro-acoustic Chamber Works » de Gérard Pape » (Mode), « Robert Noehrens Premieres » (Delos), « Humana » (Columbia) and « George Cacciopo - Advance of the Fungi » avec l’Ensemble 2E2M (Mode).
Elle se produit actuellement au Theatre du Nord-Ouest, Paris en tant que musicienne dans Le Songe d'un nuit d'été et chanteuse dans le Cabaret de Shakespeare.
